Metro Nashville Fire Station No. 31

TMP designed three new fire stations for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. Each station can accommodate two pull-through apparatus bays, ten fire fighters, two fire captains, and two EMS personnel. The stations are located in East Nashville, Joelton and Madison.  The sites in East Nashville and Joelton both achieved LEED Silver certification while the site in Madison achieved LEED Gold certification.

Two of the sites required the demolition of existing fire stations prior to the construction of the new facilities. Because each site was less than three quarters of an acre, the stations are designed as two-story buildings. The schemes are similar in configuration, but vary slightly to accommodate differences in each site.  In each project, care was taken to incorporate a variety of sustainable design features in order to meet LEED Silver certification from the USGBC.

Key aspects of the design include:

  • A centrally-located 6’-0” wide stair with two sets of double doors allows personnel to enter from both sides of a racetrack corridor on the second floor. From there, they can move quickly down the stair two-wide and exit directly into the apparatus bay.
  • Sustainable design features include solar voltaic panels, storm water runoff collection, use of low VOC materials and recycled content, drought resistant landscaping, and a car charging station.
  • The designs respond to the residential areas in which they are located by using brick exteriors, hipped and gabled roofs, dormers, a front porch, double-hung windows, and six-panel doors.
