The Way We Work: Inspired by Nature

The light fixture in our main conference room resembles sticks.

Next up in our office design series is the concept of biophilia, or bringing elements of nature into the design. Having access to natural light, plants, water features, and other nature-inspired components has been shown to boost productivity and creativity in an office environment, as well as reduce stress, improve focus, and create an overall more positive culture.

At our McEwen Northside office, we designed the shell building with floor-to-ceiling windows, offering ample natural light for all employees, no matter where their desk is located. Staff can see rolling forested hills, particularly from corner huddle rooms, which were intentionally placed for collaboration, not offices. We also incorporated lots of plants and greenery in common spaces, and used natural materials like wood and stone.

For our own office’s interior design, we went a step further and used fixtures that mimic natural shapes. For example, the main conference room includes an intricate light fixture made of wooden slats and lights that resemble sticks, bringing a natural vibe to the room. Other fixtures and artwork throughout include organic shapes, earth-toned colors, and soft textures. All lights can be dimmed or brightened so as to make a space feel less harsh and artificial.

These natural elements — lighting, greenery, texture, and more — connect indoor environments to the outside, creating a more peaceful, connected office.
