MTSU Student Union

The Challenge
Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) needed a central Student Union that could provide a casual gathering space and “living room” for students.
-
Client
Middle Tennessee State University/Tennessee Board of Regents
-
Location
Murfreesboro, Tennessee
-
Size
197,180 square feet
-
Distinguishing Features
- Two updated outdoor spaces provide shared gathering opportunities for students
- Traditional materials including limestone, brick, and glass speak to MTSU’s academic legacy
The Design Solution
The three-story building features a timeless design, with exterior materials such as limestone, brick, and glass that speak to MTSU’s academic legacy. Students can relax, study, and socialize at the campus bookstore, food court, restaurant, ballroom, movie theater, conference rooms, lounge spaces, game room, and computer group study areas.
The building defines the edges of the campus quadrangle, so it was important to have ample greenspace. There’s plenty of space for lounging under large shade trees and wide sidewalks accented with granite bands complete the edges.

The Design Impact
The Student Union building provides a central, welcoming space for students to unwind, mingle, and collabo-rate with a design that elevates MTSU’s campus aesthetic. TMP worked in conjunction with Orcutt Winslow on this project.
