The Design Solution
The Joseph M. Still Burn Center originally opened in 2009 with 16 patient bays and four procedure rooms. It’s one of the largest in the nation, serving patients nationally with a focus on the Southeast.
The Burn Center needed to double its space to meet the demand for care. TMP designed the initial expansion, including 20 new patient bays and four new procedure rooms. We relocated and expanded the existing admitting area and main waiting area with a dedicated pediatric waiting room.
Later, TMP designed a two-story tower expansion to the burn center. The expansion created 48 additional private patient rooms, consolidating the burn patient beds to one part of the hospital. The expansion provided four additional operating rooms, a 15-bed post-anesthesia care unit, and three-bed debridement space for patient intake. The scope also included a new 500-space, six-and-a-half-story parking garage.
