HCA Florida Brandon Hospital - Emergency Department Expansion

The Challenge

Brandon Hospital was struggling with fluctuating patient volumes and levels of care within their emergency department (ED). TMP designed a new ED, including a separate pediatric ED to mitigate challenges, capitalize on efficiency, and meet patient needs.

  • Client

    HCA Florida Healthcare

  • Location

    Brandon, Florida

  • Size

    78,494 square feet

  • Distinguishing Features

    • 72 total exam/treatment rooms with 16 dedicated to pediatrics
    • New ambulance entrance and helipad
    • New walk-in and waiting entrances for ED and pediatric ED

The Design Solution

The new design relocated several departments including cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy offices, bed control, and a pre-admission unit to make way for the ED expansion. The ED now has 72 total exam/treatment rooms, 16 of which are dedicated pediatrics. There are two CT rooms, two radiology rooms, a new ambulance entrance, and a new helipad above the ambulance canopy.

Most significant, the main ED and pediatric ED are now separated with two different entrances to help with wayfinding and efficiency. Both welcome patients with a dedicated entrance canopy, lobby, triage, support, and exam rooms.

The Design Solution

With clearer, dedicated ED spaces for adult and pediatric patients, the expansion made the experience easier for everyone involved, including hospital staff, caregivers, and patients.
