Tennessee State Library and Archives

The Challenge
The State of Tennessee’s previous Library and Archives facility was the oldest in the nation — outdated, in a poor location, and an inadequate representation of the important documents it housed. TMP’s history of excellent service on projects with the State of Tennessee led us to be part of the design team with Anecdote Architectural Experiences (formerly Tuck-Hinton) for the brand-new Library and Archives building — a paramount addition to Bicentennial Capitol Mall Park in Nashville.

The Design Solution
The three-story, $100-million-plus facility houses the state’s records and documents, and welcomes citizens and visitors to learn more about Tennessee history.
The building features a concrete structural frame and durable exterior materials including limestone and granite to protect its contents. A convenient main public lobby is located off the Mall and 5th Avenue, encouraging visitors to stop in for research and education. The second floor features the main Tennessee Reading Room, with public access to books and documents, as well as exceptional views of the Mall.
One of the most unique design features is the Automated Storage and Retrieval System, a state-of-the-art robotic document retrieval system in a temperature- and humidity-controlled, secure, two-story chamber. Compared to typical “compact” storage, this system allowed a reduction of 80,000 square feet from the original building program.
