University of Louisville Health Medical Center South Tower Expansion

UofL Health Medical Center South

The Challenge

Bullitt County in Kentucky lacked an inpatient hospital, requiring residents to drive half an hour to Louisville for care. The vertical expansion and renovation at the University of Louisville (UofL) Health Medical Center South transformed the existing outpatient hospital into an inpatient facility for much-needed services.

The Design Solution

TMP focused the design on the wellbeing of patients and staff while simultaneously enhancing the facility’s architectural and aesthetic appeal.

The project includes a two-floor vertical expansion and first-floor addition that houses 40 new beds, a new surgery department, increased emergency department services, pharmacy, lab, administrative support space, cafeteria, dining, and a stunning three-story lobby.

The vertical expansion was completed over an occupied hospital and designed around significant structural elements of the existing space that needed to stay.

The Design Impact

The renovated and expanded hospital accommodates the increasing demand for diverse healthcare services in the local area, serving as a testament to UofL Health’s dedication to its community.
